Webcast: The Use of Innovation Configurations to Improve Teacher Preparation in Reading Instruction
A recording of the live webcast is available for viewing. You can also view the slide presentations used by the presenters during the webcast.
Topic Overview
Reading competencies are central to the educational achievement challenges of special needs children, including students with at-risk characteristics and disabilities. Despite the critical role of reading in educational achievement, studies of institutions of higher education (IHE) teacher preparation programs in general and special education indicate that most IHEs do not provide adequate preparation in research-based reading instruction principles established in comprehensive research reviews.
This presentation and discussion was devoted to the use of an innovation configuration (IC) designed to define critical components of reading instruction and levels of implementation in teacher preparation programs. Participants reviewed the IC and applied it to sample course syllabi, followed by discussion of ways to improve IHE programs so that all teachers are well prepared in evidence-based reading instruction. Problem solving regarding barriers was emphasized.
