Leslie Judd Graitcer
Leslie Judd Graitcer currently works independently as a consultant and advisor with educational nonprofit organizations and foundations on issues related to public education reform. Currently her primary consultancies are with the Public Education Foundation in Chattanooga, Tennessee; with the Cornerstone National Literacy Initiative, based at the University of Pennsylvania, which works in 10 Northeast and Southeast public school districts; and with the BellSouth Foundation in Atlanta. For each of these organizations, Graitcer directs specific initiatives that call upon her skills to coordinate and implement reform efforts in public school districts in collaboration with nonprofit partners, business partners, foundation supporters, and universities. She also advises the organizations—and the public school districts with whom they work—on evaluation, strategic planning, teaching quality, and resource development efforts.
Other recent clients have included the Panasonic Foundation in Secaucus, New Jersey; the Ball Foundation in Glen Ellyn, Illinois; the Pittulloch Foundation in Tucker, Georgia; and the Rockdale and Sartain-Lanier Foundations in Atlanta. She is affiliated as an associate with Kronley & Associates and works in an advisory capacity with the national Grantmakers for Education organization and the Southeast Center for Teaching Quality.
From 1992 to 2002, Graitcer was the executive director of the BellSouth Foundation (after working as foundation senior program officer from 1988 to 1992 and as community affairs manager with the corporation from 1984 to 1988). The BellSouth Foundation was then a $70 million-endowed trust devoted exclusively to the improvement of education in the Southeast. During Graitcer's tenure, the BellSouth Foundation became known nationally for its proactive initiatives to address the most pressing education issues in new ways, for its transition to 100 percent electronic and online operations, for its award winning website and reports, and for its ability to leverage its assets to achieve maximum regional impact.
Graitcer began her career as a first-grade teacher in the Philadelphia Public School District after training with the National Teacher Corps. She also worked in the public health field as a health educator with Planned Parenthood of Atlanta, with the Crozer-Chester maternal/child health center in Chester Pennsylvania, and in numerous health clinics in Africa. She attended Smith College for her undergraduate degree as well as Temple University for her master's degree in education and Harvard University for her master's degree in public health.
