Michael Allen, Ph.D., is an education policy consultant in Washington, DC doing business as Allen Education. His clients have included state and federal agencies, universities, foundations, and nonprofit education organizations. Among his current projects are the development of a long-term initiative on science and mathematics teacher preparation and an exploratory study on the indicators of program quality in teacher preparation. Dr. Allen has 10 years of experience in the education policy field and has worked on issues related to teacher policy, accountability, No Child Left Behind, education research, and postsecondary education. He has authored many publications including major research reports on teacher preparation and teacher recruitment and retention. He was formerly a senior policy analyst and program director with the Education Commission of the States and a senior program officer with the National Research Council. He holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from Boston University and an M.Ed. in research methods from Charles Sturt University in Australia.
