Fourth Annual What Works Conference:
“Beyond Highly Qualified: The Development and Distribution of Highly Effective Teachers and Leaders

The fourth annual conference builds on the TQ Center’s ongoing message and mission: Teacher quality and effective leadership matter a great deal for enhancing and improving student achievement, especially in high-poverty, low-performing, and hard-to-staff schools.

Evaluating Teacher Effectiveness: A Workshop Connecting Research to Policy and Practice

TQ Center and the Regional Education Laboratory-Midwest (REL-Midwest) co-presented a workshop that brought together experts and practitioners around the existing and emerging research on educator evaluation, and policy implications and impact on practice. The workshop was held April 28-29, 2009 in Denver.

Third Annual What Works Conference: "Building Capacity for a Systems Approach to Improving Educator Quality"
The 2008 What Works Conference—Building Capacity for a Systems Approach to Improving Educator Quality—focused on the alignment of teacher quality and school leadership policies across the educator career continuum. Conference themes emphasized how coordination of policies relating to teacher preparation and recruitment, induction and professional development, compensation and working conditions, performance management, and school leadership allow states to leverage resources effectively and to generate policies and practices that are likely to raise student achievement by improving educator quality.

CREATE to Host Second Annual Conference on Middle School English Language Learners
The Center for Research on the Educational Achievement and Teaching of English Language Learners (CREATE) hosted its second annual conference October 6–7, 2008, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This year's topic was "Math, Science, and Social Studies: A Focus on English Language Learners in Middle School." Conference information is available.

ARCC Webcast on Highly Effective Teachers
The Appalachia Regional Comprehensive Center (ARCC) hosted a free webcast, Highly Effective Teachers: More Than Highly Qualified, on June 26, 2008. The webcast addressed the issue of teacher effectiveness and shared the perspectives of Sabrina Laine, Ph.D., director of the National Comprehensive Center for Teacher Quality, and Heather Peske, Ed.D., director of teacher quality at The Education Trust, as national leaders in teacher preparation, policy, and practice. TQ Connection June 2008 Discussion
In June, the National Comprehensive Center for Teacher Quality held its fifth monthly TQ Connection online discussion forum on the topic of Response to Intervention: Prevention/Early Intervention Strategies for Challenging Behavior. Frank Gresham, Ph.D., psychology professor from Louisiana State University, facilitated this interactive dialogue and responded to participant questions. The TQ Connection online discussion board currently has 108 members and is growing.

TQ Center Presentations at the AERA Annual Meeting
TQ Center staff gave AERA presentations on the topic "What the National Comprehensive Center for Teacher Quality Has Learned in the First Three Years: Implications for Policy on Teacher Preparation, Teacher Quality, and Teacher Distribution" at the 2008 Annual AERA Conference in New York City, on March 27, 2008.
